Use of GIS in Military History Research

Today, in the study of military history, terrain analysis is often a more important and precise tool than the traditionally used primary sources — original documents (orders, reports, maps, letters etc.) or participants’ memoirs. For military commanders, especially since the late 19th century, terrain analysis has been an integral part of the decision-making process. If we can use modern GIS to reconstruct the battlefield as accurately as possible, we can also better understand the thinking of commanders and analyze their potential mistakes. The use of GIS allows us to more accurately assess the impact of military operations on the environment and society as well.
