Mapping the streets: from data collection to data-driven solutions for the city
Streets are of same importance for cities as blood-vessels for humans. Following this analogy, if we want our cities to be healthy and function smoothly, we must collect all kind of street data, analyze it, and develop data-based solutions to regulate processes happening in streets. So how we do it in Vilnius? First, with laser scanners we collect data from streets and their surroundings. After that, we perform analysis of collected point clouds. Currently we managed to identify horizontal and vertical road signs, trolleybus contact network, underground stormwater drainage system, assess in detail the condition of streets surface. Using these analysis results, we develop data-based solutions and tools to observe processes happening in city streets, such as 3D models, hydraulic model of the stormwater network, priority list of street maintenance based on the condition of street surface. These and other data-based tools helps city managers better understand what’s happening in the city and apply objective, data-driven decision-making practice.
